Death totals by suicide

It has been reported that over 1 million people in the world commit suicide every year. More than 30,000 of these are said to be from the United States.

People commit suicide for a variety of reasons. The most common are because of bullying, stress with work, money, relationships or due to underlying psychological disorders such as depression, bi-polar and schizophrenia.

When someone commits suicide, it can usually come as a surprise and shock to family and friends. Many people who are thinking about suicide never really admit they are seriously considering about ending their life. Their low moods are often mistaken for just being 'down in the dumps' and if they are teenagers then they just get classed as a 'moody teen'.

If the problems of depression or other psychological illnesses are detected early enough then the treatment doctors and psychiatrists can prescribe could well save many lives that would otherwise be lost to suicide.

If any person suggests they want to commit suicide, no matter how flippant they may have said it, it is crucial people take them seriously. They should be advised to immediately see a doctor or counsellor and should be allowed to talk about why they feel this way. Talking and sharing their problems can make a huge difference as many people who resort to suicide feel they are completely on their own and nobody cares or understands how they feel.

It is claimed that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged between 14 and 25 in the United States. This shows it is a huge problem in this age group and needs to be addressed. Many say that the teenage years are the hardest due to everything changing and raging hormones. Therefore people need to try and distinguish between normally teenage mood swings and someone who is really suffering from low moods and depression. With early intervention this number could be dramatically cut.
